Home Audio Production | Software

The advent of computer technology has allowed for great leaps and bounds in the area of audio production. In the old days, music would have to be recorded track by track onto various types of tape (usually using magnetic storage) and then the separate tape tracks would have to be mixed together. It was a long, laborious, and inefficient method, yet it was all they had. In modern times, however, we are lucky. There are all sorts of software suites for PC, Macs, and Linux.

With all of the different options out there, it can be very hard to select which is right for you. I can't pretend to be able to tell you exactly what product is right for you, but there are a few points you should keep in mind: your budget, your interests/skills, and your goal.

Industry Tip #6: The Human Touch

Computers are limited.

Computers are limited.

Computers have become ubiquitous in nearly all industries, but that doesn't mean that they are flawless. Losing sight of that fact can lead to problems.

Computers only do what we tell them to do. Don't expect to find a computer that can make a song sound better with one button.

One of the most common types of audio production software is a multiple track mixing program. Many of these come with all sorts of extensions for effects and modulation. Generally, though, they somewhat represent a physical audio mixer but instead of actually having all those cords, knobs, and dials, it's all on your computer.

Using these programs, you can easily take various parts of dozens of different audio clips (some programs boast the ability to mix 100+ tracks) and combine them to produce your desired output. This includes the ability to independently adjust the volume of each and every clip as while as placing at exactly the right time in relation to the other tracks. Some of the common effects included with these programs are reverb, echo, and various distortions.

Every company that produces audio software wants to sell you their product (duh!). And, in general, they are actually good products that are worth buying. For the average hopeful home audio producer of modest means, most of these programs are far out of our budget. There are plenty of cheap knock-offs, but I would advise you to heed the adage; "You get what you pay for."

Industry Tip #8: Don't Get Overwhelemed

Don't get in over your head.

Take it slow.

Some people have a bad habit of throwing everything they have at an endeavour and, at the first sign of possible failure, they give up and move on.

This kind of tactic doesn't work well, especially in this business. It is all about enjoying what you're doing and developing relationships with people.

It would be a good idea to research those programs out there that you really want and put them on a ranked list. If you're extremely interested in some of the programs, you could even monitor the various updates and news releases about it (that information can usually be found on the website of the company that produces the software). Sometimes, these companies even hold contests with prizes of free audio production software and, who knows, maybe you could win one sometime!
